Degree Program Information

The Bachelor of Arts (Community Development) started in 1976 as an area of concentration under the Division Major Program of UP College Iloilo. Since 1984, it has become an area of specialization under the BA Program. Through the years, it draws rhetoric and content from the experiences and everyday realities of the poor and the marginalized. It is designed to equip CD students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will allow them to address the wicked problems of Philippine society and the world. CD graduates are committed to the creation of a democratic and equitable society where human rights, social justice and social responsibility are valued. They are admired for their passion as agents of conscientization and empowerment.

Program Outcomes

Our main goal in CD is societal transformation and people’s empowerment. We produce graduates with first-rate knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage in development work that promotes environmental integrity, gender equality, inclusion, and people’s empowerment.

Specifically, the program is expected to produce graduates who:

  • Demonstrate mastery and comprehensive expertise on the basic principles of CD;
  • Recognize the value of CD as fundamental building for the development of the Philippine nation and beyond;
  • Articulate and operationalize sustainable development as a crucial framework for participatory and transformative development;
  • Employ critical thinking in analyzing people’s reality, locally and internationally;
  • Utilize interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives in community organizing, development planning, and research;
  • Apply CD values and principles to address various development issues and challenges within the archipelagic context of Western Visayas;
  • Develop innovative solutions for people’s empowerment;
  • Observe ethics and standards in the practice of the CD profession; and,
  • Advocate and practice inclusivity, cognizant of the rights and unique needs of women, children and youth, the elderly, PWD, Indigenous Peoples, isolated, coastal and small island communities, and other marginalized groups.
