Degree Program Information

The UPV BA Sociology Program is designed to produce graduates with sociological training valued by employers in a wide range of public and private service sector occupations. After completing the course, a BA Sociology graduate must be analytical and critical thinkers, who will (1) explain and apply concepts, principles and theories of sociology; (2) integrate knowledge from other fields with sociology in understanding social issues and phenomena; and (3) apply knowledge and skills of research.

Program Outcomes

• Explain and apply concepts, principles, and theories in different areas of Sociology
• Integrate knowledge from other fields with sociology in understanding social issues and phenomena
• Apply knowledge of research methods in designing, implementing, and assessing social programs and projects in academic, government, corporate, development and other settings
• Analyze and address social problems and issues using sociological perspective
• Adapt skills and knowledge to perform in unfamiliar and changing situations
• Exhibit positive leadership skills, listen, negotiate, and cooperate with others in pursuing a goal
• Communicate (oral and written) ideas effectively and confidently in relevant settings
• Practice professional and ethical standards of Sociology and the social sciences
• Serve the country through socially relevant and public service activities
• Advocate environmental sustainability, specifically in coastal and aquatic environments, and gender equity
• Engage in self-improvement, career development and other intellectual pursuits
